Last weekend a friend of my cousin came to Labuan. As she came from Klang, so we planned and brought her to few tourist attraction places in Labuan. One of the interesting place was the Marine museum because of the changes since my last visit. I remember the last time I came to Marine Museum was last year and obviously this latest trip had brighten our sights. The intriguing Labuan's chimney

Pic 1: Chimney, Tanjung Kubong, Labuan

Pic 2: One of the illustration in Information Centre of
Chimney.

This first picture was taken with the combination of the chimney and the nice scenery behind it. The 106ft tall chimney is situated at Tanjung Kubong, Labuan where Tanjung Kubong is situated right beside the sea. It is believed that the chimney was built by the British after the founding of the only energy resources which is coal back in the 1800s. All red bricks were imported from England with more than 23,000 pieces.

Now what makes this chimney special and what's the story behind it?
Well, it is known that the Chinese immigrants were working with the British in the coal mining at Tanjung Kubong. However, due to the tortured life, they built a tunnel at the bottom of the chimney which connect to the sea so that they could escape. The sad part was, most of them failed to escape. As what people always said, human plans but God decide everything. Most of the chinese immigrants died when sea water flooded the tunnel while trying to escape. Some local people claims that they could hear mystery voices or noises in the night around the chimney. There were historical artifacts found such as ancient chinese bowls, old style smoking pipes and others. All these artifacts are still well kept and displayed in the Information Centre beside this chimney building.

This chimney has been an intriguing story that fascinates either the locals or visitors, to find out whether it's true or not, why not come and experience it yourself? You'll find it amazing to explore yourself.
